Read the prequels before Blood of Elves。 Although this is a good book, the prequels are more exciting and get you more invested in the series。(view spoiler)[I really appreciated how he depicted the beginning of Yennefer and Ciri's relationship。 At the beginning of the series, Geralt and Yennefer already have an established and separated relationship, and she can be bitter with him which contrasts with how devoted he is to her。 This book was great at showing that although she is a harsh individua Read the prequels before Blood of Elves。 Although this is a good book, the prequels are more exciting and get you more invested in the series。(view spoiler)[I really appreciated how he depicted the beginning of Yennefer and Ciri's relationship。 At the beginning of the series, Geralt and Yennefer already have an established and separated relationship, and she can be bitter with him which contrasts with how devoted he is to her。 This book was great at showing that although she is a harsh individual, she really is a good person and teaches Ciri well without coddling her。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Enjoyed this much more than the short stories… felt that the plot dragged a bit at times, but it’s clear that the author is setting the stage for much grander developments, and I look forward to reading the next installment!

I just love this world and the characters and the insane shit that goes on。 One of my favorite fantasy series of all time。 Sooooo much better than the show。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The structure of this book is very interesting。 It definitely takes the novel format but due to time jumps each chapter still feels like a contained story。 But the book is very conversation heavy。 Lots of talking about war and it eventually got very dull。 I loved the chapter of Ciri’s training。 The bonding between Witchers and feeling of home was comfy and entertaining。

Sometimes a 3-star review for me can mean that “this is fine, not particularly good, not bad either。” Or sometimes it means, “this is good, but significantly flawed。” That best describes this book。Blood of Elves, in sections, is really good。 It’s fantasy but written in a language that feels like a modern drama。 It’s not mired in obscurity or grandiose prose, and it’s a great character saga。 I enjoy any time we’re with Geralt, Ciri, Triss or Yennifer, and I want to spend endless time with them。On Sometimes a 3-star review for me can mean that “this is fine, not particularly good, not bad either。” Or sometimes it means, “this is good, but significantly flawed。” That best describes this book。Blood of Elves, in sections, is really good。 It’s fantasy but written in a language that feels like a modern drama。 It’s not mired in obscurity or grandiose prose, and it’s a great character saga。 I enjoy any time we’re with Geralt, Ciri, Triss or Yennifer, and I want to spend endless time with them。On the other hand the moments we are not with them and we are spending time with 5 or 6 characters talking about war, politics, and factions, my eyes completely glaze over。 It’s not ever interesting to me discussing which kingdom has a beef with the other and I wish I could just pick it up as we go instead of spending entire chapters on it。It’s also true that this series continues to have pretty rampant misogyny, similar to the short stories。 I find this book to be less offensive than some of the awful moments with Dandelion and Yennifer in the previous books, but it’s still clearly there。 Your mileage will vary on whether this is a dealbreaker for you, but I found myself able to enjoy the moments around these “cringey” parts, while not completely forgiving them。 。。。more

Excellent installment, as I already love the world through other Witcher media I'm sure I'm a bit biased。 Regardless, I adore diving into these characters more and the story as it unfolds。 Can't wait for the next one! Normally, I enjoy books better than film or TV adaptations… I was a bit surprised that it wasn’t the case with this book。 The pace is a bit uneven here and I wasn’t aware that this isn’t the earliest chronologically in the series when I started it… that may be half of the issue。 Also, I listened to the book through Audible and having a male narrator for all the parts doesn’t always work well, which was an issue here。 Also, I’m through the first two seasons of the Netflix Witcher series, so I fel Normally, I enjoy books better than film or TV adaptations… I was a bit surprised that it wasn’t the case with this book。 The pace is a bit uneven here and I wasn’t aware that this isn’t the earliest chronologically in the series when I started it… that may be half of the issue。 Also, I listened to the book through Audible and having a male narrator for all the parts doesn’t always work well, which was an issue here。 Also, I’m through the first two seasons of the Netflix Witcher series, so I felt ahead on some revelations and behind on others here… 。。。more

The Danish translation for the audio book is not good。 I've read that there were problems with the English translation too。It uses words as "Doctor's Conference" and "scanning" in a Fantasy novel。Call me old, but that doesn't work for me。The story is mediocre, characters and world building too。 I don't think I'll read more in this series。 The Danish translation for the audio book is not good。 I've read that there were problems with the English translation too。It uses words as "Doctor's Conference" and "scanning" in a Fantasy novel。Call me old, but that doesn't work for me。The story is mediocre, characters and world building too。 I don't think I'll read more in this series。 。。。more

I deeply love The Witcher series。 Everything about it is great - love, action, philosophy, world-building, characters, plot twists, inter-dimensional travel。 And oddly enough because of how macho Geralt is, it's a fairly feminist series :) I deeply love The Witcher series。 Everything about it is great - love, action, philosophy, world-building, characters, plot twists, inter-dimensional travel。 And oddly enough because of how macho Geralt is, it's a fairly feminist series :) 。。。more

I liked it! Though - it does certainly fall into the sex obsessed fantasy tripe that I hate so much。 It seems to be all they talk about Sometimes。 And everyone just seems to want to drop their pants at the thought of Geralt。 It’s deeply infuriating when I came for magic, lore and Witchers…when really all I got was horny people。 But unfortunately…I find you can’t really divorce the two。 Fantasy is full of horny people。 If you can’t get bitches IRL you can get bitches as an elf I guess。 I suppose I liked it! I will never know。 But the descriptions where wonderful and the dialogue made me laugh loudly often。 I just wish there was a finer balance - or the dialogue was maintained through the book。 Definitely worth a read if you like the franchise…but you will have to push aside the more problematic readings and inclusions of the text。 。。。more

I did not finish this book。 I may have liked this more and finished it if I had been reading it versus listening as an audio book (see more below) but I just couldn't get through it。The format of this series of books is to tell the story almost exclusively through dialog。 So much of the time it's someone telling the story of what happened versus what is happening now (though that happens too occasionally)。 But it leaves so much out of the story and too often the narrator will say something like I did not finish this book。 I may have liked this more and finished it if I had been reading it versus listening as an audio book (see more below) but I just couldn't get through it。The format of this series of books is to tell the story almost exclusively through dialog。 So much of the time it's someone telling the story of what happened versus what is happening now (though that happens too occasionally)。 But it leaves so much out of the story and too often the narrator will say something like "you know what I'm going to say" so they don't say it and it leaves the reader clueless of what is happening。 I couldn't get into the format。 The other big issue (which may not have been as bad if I had been reading instead of listening to the book) is that everyone is angry at everyone else all the time。 This was my third book in the series and all the books are just full of negativety。 I wanted to finish but in the end realised I was not getting any enjoyment except to say I had finished a book so I stopped。I wanted to like this series of books since I like the Netflix series, and hoped it would provide more detailed and enriching view of the characters (books were generally better than the movies) but in this case I don't think it's true。 。。。more

I really liked this book。 It did feel like I was able to enjoy it more than I otherwise would have b/c I went in having already seen the TV adaptation so I had context for some of the names and general lore making it a faster read b/c some world-building was already there。

Detailed and ImmersiveAs a fan of Henry Cavills portrayal of Geralt It has been fascinating slipping into the source material that he fought so hard to champion。 Looking forward to starting the next book。

I really liked Ciri's interaction with the other Witchers and everything that had to do with her training。 Yennefer plays a big role towards the end of the book, and all the political intrigue continues to develop。 There isn't much monster hunting in this one, so less action overall, but good for the character development。 I really liked Ciri's interaction with the other Witchers and everything that had to do with her training。 Yennefer plays a big role towards the end of the book, and all the political intrigue continues to develop。 There isn't much monster hunting in this one, so less action overall, but good for the character development。 。。。more

Welcome to a familiar setting, especially if you've got a passing familiarity with the Forgotten Realms/D&D franchise。 Humans, elves, half-elves, dwarves, gnomes and halflings。 Druids, priests, warriors, bards and enchantresses/wizards。 Along with that, we've got an orphaned princess with a prophesy hanging over her, whom everyone needs to protect - and she's being trained as a skilled fighter and a powerful mage against the backdrop of an invasion by an Evil Empire。 All the same, despite the se Welcome to a familiar setting, especially if you've got a passing familiarity with the Forgotten Realms/D&D franchise。 Humans, elves, half-elves, dwarves, gnomes and halflings。 Druids, priests, warriors, bards and enchantresses/wizards。 Along with that, we've got an orphaned princess with a prophesy hanging over her, whom everyone needs to protect - and she's being trained as a skilled fighter and a powerful mage against the backdrop of an invasion by an Evil Empire。 All the same, despite the setting and the backbone of the plot being familiar to the point of being a cliche, there's plenty to enjoy and several aspects that make this work memorable。* Ciri doesn't come across as a Mary Sue - you see her struggles to master witcher fighting skills and to learn magic。 Her combination of naivety, curiosity and recklessness makes this a good depiction of a thirteen-year-old girl, and makes her sympathetic。 * There are plenty of amusing and sometimes thought-provoking one- and two-liners。 The best would have to be Geralt's comparison to global politics to a catfight as he explains his neutrality, and the descriptions of the activities in and around the magical academy (it's thirsty work。。。)* The fight scene on the boat, enlivened by Linus Pitt's attempts to determine the taxonomy of the water monster, and the annoying Everett - pure gold for a blend of comedy and action。* Sapkowski manages to give plenty of necessary background information without excessive info-dumping, such as during the interracial debate about whether Dandilion's ballad is true or not, and when Ciri consults Jarre。* The translator has done a great job with names so they have a familiar quasi-Celtic ring to English readers - although I wonder what the original had instead of "Oxenfurt" for the university town。However, I'm only giving this three stars because it was a bit rambling, and although it's fun seeing Ciri develop and the political situation grow complex, there's no clear goal (apart from "keep Ciri safe") and the book has something of a cliffhanger ending and leaves some questions unanswered。 There's also quite a lot of Ciri's training told in a set of flashbacks that make it difficult to work out what's happening in the past and what's in the present。 Will I read the next one in the series? Maybe, but it won't be on the top of my TBR list。 。。。more
